Educators Conference

Bringing together educators, artists and gallery staff, The National Educators Conference will address critical thinking, artist practices and learning engagement strategies right now in contemporary Australian art. Held across the Art Gallery of NSW, Carriageworks and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia over two days the conference features a range of practical studio based workshops, artist and curator talks and educator lead sessions.

Dates:

Carriageworks: Thursday 6 April, opening reception 6–8pm
MCA: Friday 7 April, 9am – 12.30pm
Art Gallery of NSW: Friday 7 April, 1.30 – 4.30pm

We are also able to offer a special price of $144 for teachers from low SES schools

Conference Reception: Meet and Connect: Welcome to The National: New Australian Art

Thursday 6 April 6.00pm – 8.00pm, Carriageworks

Join education staff, curators and guest artists at this social evening launch of the Educators Conference. On arrival, pick up your conference tote bag full of goodies, mingle with fellow teachers and gain insights into the exhibition at Carriageworks with artist Ramesh Nithiyendran and curator Nina Myall.

Choose from the following active, hands-on session with guest artists, teachers and MCA Artist Educators. These workshops will take place in the galleries and NCCL.

Workshop 1: Artist practice

Participate in an intimate, hands-on workshop with artist Khadim Ali, designed especially for educators. Gain insight into the artist's practice and learn new approaches to art-making.

Workshop 2: Creative starting points for contemporary art practice

Learn how to use an exhibition as a valuable resource to gather and generate ideas for starting a body of work.  Put your knowledge into practice through a series of hands-on strategies and processes used by contemporary artists.

Workshop 3: Creative Writing in the gallery and the classroom 

Build confidence to experiment with language, literary devices and creative forms in response to artworks in The National: New Australian Art. Expand your existing skills with new approaches from Karen and Sue for practical applications in your classroom.

With the topic How experience of place can determine a national identity respond to artists and artworks in the exhibition with the Gallery’s artist educators. Workshop ideas and classroom strategies that will be shared and exchanged.
